  1. House - burnings and Conflagrations
    People speak of the terrible destruction caused by Cromwell's army in Athlone. Coote is said to have burned the town, and although it was re-built, it never recovered its former strength.
    Later there was accidental fire which destroyed the Eastern portion of the town. About two hundred years ago the Castle was struck by lightning which set fire to the magazine containing gun-powder and hand grenades. The explosion was so terrific that nearly all the houses were destroyed
