  1. People speak locally of the Big Wind of January 6th 1839. A story is told of a party who were going through Cork in a 'jaunting car.' They were lifted up into the air and swept across the city, and they landed safely on the opposite side of the city.
    Many houses in Coosan were destroyed. The Police Barrack was destroyed in Athlone. Many lives were lost and stock killed. The chimney of the Wollen Mills was blown down and the watchman had a very narrow escape. He had just left the Engine Room when it collapsed.
