  1. The local landlord was Chapman. He had his residence in the town of Mullingar but he nearly always stayed in this district. The family of Chapmans had settled in the district for about three generations.
    They were always looked upon as fairly good landlords. Chapman's ancestors first got possession of the lands of this district through Cromwell. The lands were divided into farms under the guidance of the landlord Chapman. This landlord had a great power over his tenants. The tenants were often punished very severly for small acts.
    Tithes were collected in this district in former times. The tithes were collected by the landlord and the grand jury. The tithes were collected from the tenants in money. When this landlord had power over his tenants they were not allowed to have any mixing or dealing with priests. He would punish them severly if he found them with a priest. If his
