Gold, shining gold the workmen saw
    Spread out upon their path
Gold, shining gold in heaps they saw
    Inside the fairy rath.
The workmen stood and gazed in awe,
    Like the sunset's golden rays,
Here was gold, yes ! gold enough
To last them all their days.

In that moment they dreamt their dreams,
By the fort 'neath the swaying trees,
As their eyes did feast on the shining gold
    In the mystical evening breeze.
Gather the gold, yes, the first thing to do
    Gather the gold and then.
Oh ! the riches they'd have and all they would do
No more they'd be poor working men.
    III
While their eyes did feast on the golden heap
And rejoiced at the shining find,
A crash and a smash caused the workmen all
    To turn and gaze behind.
They saw not the cause of the ringing crash
That echoed so loud and wild,
The landscape lay bathed in evening sun
