    In the parish of Emly, Co. Tipperary, there are numerous families of Burkes. Those of them who are farmers boast of a peculiarity. At the entrance-gate to each Burke farm there grows an old gnarled white thorn bush. A Burke would prefer to cut off his right hand as to cut down this bush. They say that such a bush is the landmark of the Burkes.
    There is an old saying in this district also - "as ould as a bush", which is as often used as the expression "as ould as the hills."
