2. The Local Forge

   There are very few forges in our Parish. This one is owned by Pat Vaughan. His father had been smith for may years. About three yards westwards from Kantoher cross is situated the forge. It is a low long building with strong concrete walls and an iron roof. it contains a strong heavy wooden door. The smith stands on the great doorway just beyond the treshold in front of the fire-place.
   He has on him over his clothes a dirty leathern apron. It is fastened to his shoulders and half covered his enormous hairy chest. There is a girt at his waste and decended below his knees. He stand with one knee crooked leaning upon a long ash handle sledge.
   The forge is lighted by one small windows in the southern wall. The most important work he does is shoeing horses and asses. He
