There was a character known as "Captain" Grant in this district long ago. He was supposed to be a Wicklow man. He is said to have "stolen from the rich and given to the poor". He was a farmer in Co Wicklow. It happened a that he was unable to pay his rent.The bailiff came and took his belongings. He had a hive of bees which belonged to his mother. He asked especially to have them left to him but was refused the request. It was this incident it seems which changed his whole life. He is said to have started there and them to rob.
He came to Co,Leix. He was in a house in Bacca in this district. This house was situated between the present house owned by Daniel Mortimer and the present house owned by Mrs Martin Cuddy. Both of Bacca. There lived in this house a poor widow and her children. She had an only pig which she reared to "pay the rent" Grant killed this pig the night that he got a lodging in this house. When she went out the next morning to bring the pig to the fair to sell it, she found it dead.
