  1. In the heart of Gowran stands an old abbey. Years ago monks lived there & when enemies surrounded them they escaped through an underground tunnell to Bally Shean Mór which is an old castle about half a mile from the village.
The monks were betrayed by a woman friend who spilled milk on the way & Cromwell murdered the monks in Bally Shean Mór. The Abbey is now in protestant hands. There are some beautiful carved doors and windows. Lots of money was found there by a family named O'Hara.
