  1. Most of the poor people came from Skibereen. They used to go around from place to place depending on the people to feed them. The people used to give them one penny sometimes and they would keep it and gather a few more pennies until they would have enough to pay for their nights lodging. Sometimes they used to keep their pennies to buy bread. The farmers would give them a nights shelter and if it was in the Summer they would sleep on a cock of hay. Some of them used to carry baskets with them and little articles to sell in them.
