  1. Churning
    We own a churn. It holds four gallons of milk.
    It is about 16 yrs. old.
    The sides are round and it is worked by a dash.
    it consists of three parts, the lid, the dash and the handle.
    Butter is made twice at week in Summer and once a week in Winter.
    It takes approximitely one hour to churn in Winter and it is done in half that time in Summer.
    Strangers who come in while churning is in progress always take a dress, or a hand in churning as it was a belief years ago that unless this was done, the visitor would bring the butter.
    Each one in our house take a hand at churning.
    It is worked by hand.
    Whne the butter is made it appears on the dash.
    Warm water is used to bring up the temperature in cold weather.
    When all is finished, the butter is taken out and washed several time
