The people that lived in those houses had to be content with any plain food .They used get up at daybreak to boil potatoes for their breakfast .Some times they would have no oat meal bread or bread made from new potatoes grated with a lid of it holed with an awl.When grated the stuff was usually put into a piece of cloth to squeeze out the water .
Then what had remained in the bag would be flattened out and baked on a griddle.Anyone who had a quarter of this kind of bread and one cup of tea was considered very well off.They used only eat two or three meals a day.At that time any man that was able to buy a quarter of tea and two pound of sugar for his family was looked upon as a gentleman .What you would hear old people saying(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
