There were three kinds of bread: oaten-bread; barley-bread and wheaten bread. The farmer killed a calf and gave it to the poor people. They worked from six o'clock in the morning until ten at night. They worked before the first meal in the morning.
They made black-bread from black potatoes ground up, baked and hung up to dry. They also made stampey with potatoes and ground barley.
When eating they had a candle made of a long reed steeped in pig-fat. One member of the family held it in his hand while the others ate. The candle was passed round till all the members had eaten.
