Long ago there was not any coal burned in this district and turf was the only fire stuff. The light the people had long ago was rushlights and Tallow Candles The Tallow Candles were very thick and when burning there would be a very ugly smell from the tallow. These candles would stand for two months.
A custom long ago was to keep a sow and suckers, young calves, fowl, and even a horse in the kitchen. The reason for keeping the fowl inside at night was because fowl stealing was so common in those days.
