- Long ago the people were about eight or nine years old before they wore shoes. There was a man named Martin Whelan going around from place to place and he never wore shoes in his life time. He was called "Martin the Scollips." He had no home but he used to sleep in all the houses in the parish. He is dead about eight years. There was another old woman going around called "Mary the Singer" and she never wore shoes. She had no home and her right name is unknown. When the people saw her coming they sang the following rhyme.
"Mary the Singer, come home to your dinner and all the neighbours welcome you girleen." None of the people go barefoot now. The reason the people went barefoot long ago is that they had no shoes. It is said that the fairies would come in the water in which the feet were washed in was kept inside. There are no boots made here at present. Timber soled shoes were worn long ago and they were called clogs. They were not made in this district but when the people wanted them they bought them in Carrick People here never wore skins of animals on their feet.
