The richer people killed pigs for their own use and others bought bacon in the shops. On Christmas day the people had tea for their breakfast and bacon for dinner and potatoes and milk for their supper. On Easter Sunday morning breakfast consisted of eggs, milk and potatoes. Eggs were not eaten again until Easter Sunday morning the next year as the people sold them as they wanted the money badly.
Whatever meat was left over at the commencement of Lent was safely stored away and eaten for dinner on Easter Sunday. On Good Friday, Ash Wednesday and Spy Wednesday they had oaten meal porridge made with water and salt for dinner and supper they had potatoes and salt.
Milk was not allowed on those three days even a calf or an infant should bawl three times before they got fed. Very few people remember the time when tea was not used.
