- There was a great many forges everywhere throughout the Co Cavan, & they are almost of the same type of buildings.
They are usually a one roomed shed generally about from thirty ft long, & twenty in width. They all have a very large door to allow the horses to pass in & out a few open windows.
In the centre of the forge stands the Anvil, or the iron block upon which the blacksmith forms the shoes, & does the general smithy work. He always keeps on a large coal fire, in which he heats the iron and hot for temperings.
In the corner of the forge stands a large hand bellows with which the blacksmith keeps the coal five bright, when ever he wants a good fire for heating the iron.
There is always a pile of old shoes, & old scrap iron in the corner of the forge. The forge is nearly always a stone wall built shed, roofed with boards felt and corrugated iron in some cases, & in more cases they are built of stone & roofed with wood.- Bailitheoir
