- The houses in olden times were usually thatched. They were thatched with rushes, reeds, or straw. In every house long ago there was a bed called the "settle-bed." This was placed along the side-wall and was used as a bed by night. Then it was folded up and used as a seat by day. The fire was not always place at the gab end it was often placed in the middle of the floor and there was no chimney. Instead of a chimney there was a hole in the roof to let out the smoke. The chimneys were not made of mortar or stone but were made of wood.
