- Old Crafts.Necessity is the mother of invention. This saying is proved by the invention of rush lights before candles and oil lamps were even dreamt of.Rushes were gathered on a fine day, then left aside to dry and afterwards peeled. They were then dipped in grease or some such oily substance and stored in a dry place for future use.Baskets were made from sallies which grow beside streams and rivers. With these they could make any kind of creel, hamper of basket. White or fancy baskets were made form sallies which were first boiled in a big pan.Sallies were also used for making riding whips. In past days beautiful whips of this kind were made from long, young sallies which were plaited and interwoven like a whip lash. People used to come from far and near for their highly prized whips.Spinning and weaving are other home crafts. Wool was carded and then spun into thread.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
