  1. After the Famine in Ireland the people used to spin yarn and grow a good deal of flax, and they used to sell it at the market in Birr. One night a man from near Banggher set out to Birr with a ball of yarn to be in time for the market next day, which started that time at seven o'clock. On his way he had to pass a certain bush, and there he heard great crying, and breaking of sticks. He wondered what was the matter and on standing in behind the bush he saw a lot of young boys and girls setting a large fire, when all was ready they brought forth a(nd) very old man with a white beard. They put a spike straight through his body and kept swinging him in and out over the fire till the man thought they had him burned up, but not a scorch ever came
