In this locality two kinds of churns are used - the end-over-end type and the dash-churn. Both types vary in size - they are generally made of oak.
People here churn twice or three times weekly according to the supply of milk. The end-over-end churn is barrel-shaped and the dash churn is the shape of an ordinary churn slightly waisted in the middle. There is also a hand churn which stands on the table and is worked by a handle. This handle causes beaters to turn inside - the beaters consist of a small frame made up of rungs arranged in the shape of a cross. At present (1938) the end-over-end churn costs about five pounds.
