“On Shrove Tuesday the people of this district gets married mostly...”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)and then it is lit with a match.
When the fire would be burnt down each person would take a lighting stick into their own field.
Rock Sunday is kept on the 3rd Sunday of July, because on that day about 30 years ago the people of Barnane and all surrounding district went there to bury the tithes, that is the people wouldn't have to pay any more to the clergy.
On "Chalk Sunday" old batchelors and maids are marked with a piece of chalk by some person outside.
On Hallowe'en the people around here have a lot of Customs.
They "dive"for apples on that night.
They get a tub of water and put an apple floating on it and everyone tries to get the apple.
On St Martin's Day the people of this district kill a duck of a chicken and sprinkle the blood at the four corners of the house.
On St. Stephen's Day the boys of this district buries the wren. they go in twos or threes. My brother and myself goes. We get 5 or 6 shillings. We put on dresses and eye-fiddles. I do have a mouth-organ and my brother a toy bugle.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
