- In this district up to twenty years ago most of the houses were thatched, and on that account there were many men who earned their living by thatching.Barley and oaten straw they chiefly used, and the thatching was generally done at the end of Autumn before the severe weather came, in Winter.They got bundles of straw and a ladder. The old straw on the roof was made even, and well-cleaned of weeds or other things. The straw was then put on in layers and neatly trimmed off at the front, back, and eaves.
It was then fastened on nicely with straw ropes, and made firm so that the wind or a storm(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
