- There was in Clonroche a man named Bartle and his daughter Biddy Bartle. They lived in a little house where Brownes store is now.They made the candles in that house for this district. The other people made candles also, whenever they killed an animal.They made the candles as follows. Tallow was put into a pot. This pot contained boiling water. Then an iron rod was put across the pot.The wick was made of a few threads plaited together were tied on to the bar. The threads were put down in the tallow and were left there for a few minutes.Then the rod was raised and grease on the wicks allowed to dry or harden. The wicks were dipped again and raised, and the process continued until, the proper thickness of candle was secured. The candles were then suspended from various parts of the roof to harden. They were not as good as present day candles. They wasted off in grease too quickly.
