- In the year 1846 and 1847 the famine broke out in Ireland. A blight came on the potatoes which were the main food of the peasant class, and they died by wayside of starvation.
That continued for over two years and even worse a terrible epidemic broke out called the cholera. The under-takers could not keep them buried as thousands died daily. It was the custom to make a large grave , as they had only one coffin. That was the first time , the workhouses,or houses of refuge were built in Ireland. They were built by the British Government.
People were given a certain amount of Indian meal per head and this with some potatoes had to supply their daily wants.- Bailitheoir
