At that time 40 years ago there was a prosperous distillery in Wexford owned by Devereux.
It was situated on what is still called the Distillery Road. The remains of the building have now turned into part of Pierces Foundry. There was also a brewery-owned by Wickhams but it too is now closed.
The barley is sold to the maltsters who ship it to the big distilleries and breweries. All round the town may be seen the malt houses and during the winter the smell of malting is one of the characterised smells of Wexford.Written by Emma Owens Age 13
