1. Old Houses

   Long ago houses weer generally thatched and had mud walls. These were very old houses. The thatch was got from the straw which they had left after threshing. In some houses the bed was in one corner of the kitchen with a screen around it.

   In the majority of houses the fireplace was against the gable wall. At Devereaux's of Murrintown the fireplace is in the corner of the kitchen.

   Clay floors were general. Some houses had brick floors. In olden time floors were made of yellow mud and lime mortar mixed together.

   Half doors were common in former times. I have a half door at home. Coal and wood were used for burning in fires.

   candles and rushlights were for giving light at night. Others had hob lamps for light. A man named Allen made candles locally.
