through the Drumshambo meadows the leader halted the band and said there was a traitor among them who would swing them all and he asked permission to shoot him or else they would never see him again. The other men said that could not be as they were all sworn members of the United Irishmen so the leader left them and was never seen again in that district. The following night nine men were taken off their beds and were tried in Carrick on Shannon, Cambell gave the freemason sign in the dock and was put back but eight men were sentenced to death and hanged. These were nearly all Grimes and the clan was almost wiped out. The spy was Sheridan. One Grimes left Esker and settled in Kiltycreevagh and his only decentant is Michael Grimes now aged 84.
