  1. Cromwell, Sarsfield, and De Ginkle, were all at Athlone.
They marched here. When De Ginkle was attacking Athlone he looked out at the fighting through a hole in the door of Miss Cambell's shop, Church Street.
During the siege a bell was rung for curfew and as a signal for the attack.
The bell was brought from Clonmacnoise by the English soldiers and is still rung in Saint Mary's Church.
When De Ginkle was going away from Athlone he hid nearly all his big guns and rifles in a hill called Moran's Hill which is a mile outside the town.
General Custume was the brave soldier who at the Siege of Athlone with some others gave their lives to save the town by breaking down the bridge.
Long ago the Irish and the Danes fought great battles in Lough Ree and the Irish nearly always won.
Tithe wars were fought on the old bridge of Athlone.
