- Football and Hurling were played in this district in former times.
There were fifteen men aside both in hurling and football matches long ago. Sometimes it did not matter how many men came they all played. The best men were picked first and the bad ones left till last.
They mostly played from townland to townland. There was a goal at each townland and when one team got the ball they ran off to the other team's goal. The other team had to catch up with them if they wanted to get the ball.
The teams were dressed in their ordinary clothes.
The goal was made of two upright stakes and if stakes could not be got they put two large stones in their places.
Sometimes the ball was made out of an animals bladder.
The hurley ball was a round knot of wood called a shinty.
