Saint Brigid and two Nuns wanted to cross the Shannon. Saint Brigid went across on stepping-stones. The Nuns were afraid to cross that way so they got a boat. When they were half way over a current carried the boat away. Saint Brigid prayed that the boat and the Nuns should reach the other side safely and they did.There was a holy well dedicated to Saint Brigid but it is not used now. There is a place called Saint Brigid's Terrace after Saint Brigid.A great many people in Athlone are called after the local Saint. Saint Brigid's day is on the 1st February but it is not kept as a holiday.Saint Brigid was buried in Down Patrick.
