boat went down and all were drowned. The school-master could swim but he was afraid to come in to the shore.
Long ago people used to have a taister (this is what an old lady of eighty seven calls it) over the bed, it was sometimes a curtain and sometimes boards. There was a small farmer living in Stoughan in 1848 or '49. One of the children was in the bed sick and anotherchild was in the room with him and he had a candle. There was flax thrown up on the taister of the bed and the child held up the candle and the flax caught fire and the whole house was burnt. No one was burnt to death but everything belonging to them was destroyed.
A man named Pat Reilly had five or six cows in a byre. The byre took fire and in the middle of the night all the cows were burnt.
