- Many are agreed that there was a Hedge school at Billywood Cross about three miles from the village of Moynalty. At one time a man named Ball taught there and again a Mr Gilsenan. Both were lame. They lodged near the School and when going on any journey rode on a donkey.
School was carried on in the open when weather permitted during Summer and in a shed during the Winter.
The children were seated on large stones or on sods of turf piled up to a seat. None can give much information as to the subjects taught but all are agreed the Latin was taught. There was a school(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
