  1. Old Houses.
The houses in olden times were thatched. The straw came from the land. There was an odd slated one, and the slates were got from other countries.
Some of the old houses had a bed in the kitchen and it was beside the fire. It was called a settle bed.
The chimneys were made of mortar. The fire was set in the middle of the floor, and some of the houses had no chimneys.
The old floor were made of clay.
Half doors were common formerly but there are not so common now.
Wood and turf were used for the fire; mostly wood. Sometimes candles were used, at other times torches and rush-lights.
    Candles were not made locally.
