  1. Most of the old houses in this district have mud walls -
    The mud was procured by having yellow clay was dropped in the yard, and straw cut into six-inch lengths, thrown over it, and water. Then some cattle were driven on to the heap and made to walk round and round on it till the clay was tempered - that is fit for building. It was then thrown up in a wall, quite roughly, and when nearly dry it was cut down smoothly, or comparatively so, with a spade.
    Most of them had thatched roofs, the straw for which was procured from the local farm -
