“This district seems to have suffered much during the famine.”
To save the potato - people took very great pains.
They make a basket work mesh & hung it across the kitchen and put the potatoes on this - thinking that the very dry atmosphere would keep them from decaying. But even here they rotted as badly as anywhere else. To save the seed and at the same time have the precious potato for food, they got a goose's quill and picked out the sprout most carefully and planted it.
