  1. Long ago children did not wear boots until they were seven or eight years of age.
    There are no people around the district who never wore boots.
    The water they used to wash their feet with they would put a red coal in it and then throw it out.
    There was some superstition attached to it but the person does not know what it was.
    She thinks it was to prevent them from getting cold.
    There are very few boots made locally but there are a good many repaired locally.
    There are five shoemakers in the district. They had not half as much machinery long ago as what they have at present.
    They make the leather from the hides of cattle or sheep.
