  1. Long ago the people made candles and this is how it was done. The people got rushes and peeled them then rolled the pith in melted tallow. The rush was left to dry then they rolled it again in melted tallow until it was as big as one of our candles. Starch was made from potatoes they cut the potatoes up real fine put them in a bucket and left them there for a night and in the morning they put boiling water in on the grated potatoes and this made starch.
