  1. At the latter end of the seventeenth Century and in the early days of the eighteenth Century the penal laws were in full force in Ireland. During that time every priest found saying mass was put to death and any Catholic found attending mass or practising their religion suffered torture. The priests were hidden by the people and special hiding places were built for the purpose despite all precautions, priests were often found travelling through the country by the soldiers. one instant is related to where a young priest was overtaken by a party of soldiers when in an exposed place he stood stood in by a gate pier to let them pass.
