There seems to have been plenty spies as the officer is said to have a long list of names and anybody whose name was not found in this list was set free.
Several people were tried and some were hanged and some transported.
The rumour went that the sergeant was killed by a blow of a hatchet and that this weapon was afterwards thrown into a deep pool which stands in front of Clondegad Bridge.
The military authorities it seems gave credit to this rumour and dammed the river near the bridge (which was not there then) and teemed the pool.
The hatchet was not found but ever since the pool is known as Linn na bhFear.
