- There was a hedge-school on the New Line about eighty years ago near where Rhode Hayes' cottage now stand. The teacher's name was Ms Maher, he was a stranger. He taught the scholars beside a ditch and in winter time he used to teach in an old house. Latin and Greek were taught and Irish was nearly always spoken.
- About a hundred and thirty years ago, Hugh "the wig" was a hedge-school master in this parish but the place where he taught is unknown but it is supposed to be in the Moat in Latteragh.
He used only to stay one night every place and come back again on that night week. During that time the scholars used to get(continues on next page) - Collector
