  1. Bread was made in olden times from barley, wheat, and rye. People did not use any mills, because nearly all had their own querns, and ground their own flour in their own houses. Wheaten, potatoe, and stampy bread was made. Potatoe cake was made of 5 or 6 potatoes salt, lard, and butter.
    Method. mash the potatoes with a little flour, and put a little butter or lard in the mixing of it, if not enough of juice add a little milk. Stampy was made of grated boiled potatoes, flour, butter and salt.
    Method. Mix the flour, potatoes, and butter together, add salt, form into a stiff dough, and wet a little with sour milk. Wheaten bread was made the same as now, but the colour that time was brown because the bran
