  1. Long ago black bread was used by the people in this district. The flour was made from wheat and barley. They made their own flour by grinding the wheat in querns. Milk was used when they were making bread. Bread was baked on a griddle and also in a pot-oven. Some people made enough bread to last a week and others would make enough for a day.
    Cakes were not crossed when baked on a griddle but cakes baked in a pot-oven were crossed. oaten-meal bread was also made long ago.
