“A few days before Christmas 1865, the Ibis, a steamship was lost at Ballycroneen Bay, a little to eastward of Poerhead...”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)on the Julian rock now known as the Ibis, about one mile from shore. Some of the crew made a raft and tried to reach the shore with some of the passengers but they were drowned in about two hours. The Ibis broke amidships and the stern sank. The fore part drifted in close to the shore, but no help could be given. A large ship “The City of London” was seen coming out of Cobh. She lowered her boats and saved the remainder of the crew and passengers. The whole loss was fourteen drowned. Some time after the wreck of the Ibis a big lot of tea came ashore. Scarcely anybody knew how to make it as it was not known at that time. Some people boiled it in saucepans and it nearly drove them mad. They could not sleep for days. Part of the hull of the boat can be easily seen at low water tides. This is only one of the many ships that was wrecked at Ballycroneen Bay. At that time the bay was thought to be one of the most dangerous ones in the south coast(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
