The farmers around here and in fact in the surrounding parishes lived very simple and inexpensive lives; their principal food was potatoes and milk three times a day until the failure of the crop. When they did fail the famine came with a sad result. The working men in the Summer months used to go out to work in the fields at sunrise and go to their breakfast of potatoes and skim milk about nine o' clock. Then they went to work again until between one and two o' clock. They had their dinner then and had the same meal with some times a bit of stock fish. When they would finish up at night they had the same for supper. The men of those days must be very strong, powerful race(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
