The earliest way of making butter in Ringaskiddy was to put the cream into a quart bottle. The bottle was corked and then shaken.
Two or more often took part in the shaking. The bottle was very much used by people of two or three cows.
Then the "Dash" followed, which was a long straight stick resembling the handle of a present day brush with a wooden plate about two inches thick at the bottom.
The old churn was like the present day milk- churn with bands similar to those of a barrel.
There was a cover on the top with a hole through which the "dash" passed. The "dash" was kept working up and down through the cover until the butter was made.
