- My parents first recollections of kitchen lights are "splinters". When the "crocails" were brought from the bog they were cut with an axe into many pieces. The moment these were put in the fire they blazed up being very dry from their period in the hob. They were then put between two stones in the hob specially made for the purpose and afforded a good bright light. When this was exhausted another was put up and so on all through the night.
