'The Board of Works', as it was called. This grant was to be repayed at something like 5% per annum. All these houses in the district have now fallen into disuse, and are replaced throughout by neat cottages.
In a farm once owned by John O'Callaghan of Ballyshonin, Berrings is the site of an old house known locally as 'The Barrack'. It got its name thus, The O'Callaghan family were evicted many years ago by a landlord named Philips, and a man was put into the house instead to care the farm and carry on the work; such men were known as 'emergency men'.
The people of the neighbourhood did not want this state of affairs, and the life of the 'emergency man' as in every similar case, was in danger, consequently the police were called on to give him protection. They took up residence in the house in question, which was as since known locally as 'The Barrack'.
