   Long ago wooden latches were used to fasten doors and in more remote ages a stick was driven through a hole in the wall which was pulled across the back of the door at night and put into a hole on the other side.

   Long ago houses were circular in shape. A circle of sticks were placed standing firmly on the ground with about a foot between them. Rods were then woven in and out, between the sticks, as if a large basket was being made. The rods were then plastered on the outside with mud. Those houses were built when Colm Cille was going to school and it seemed (sic) likely that they were the first introduction to the mud cabins that were in existence up to the present day but are all in ruins now.

   Stone houses were built as far back as the fifth century still they were rare among the poorer classes because the craft of masonry was not up to date at that time.

   Long ago turf or wood was used for fires as this country was one
