  1. Bird-lore
The most common of our wild birds are pigeons, crows, cranes, sea-gulls, water fowl, hawks, woodcock, snipe, jackdaws, starlings, blackbirds, thrushes, wrens, robins, sparrows, blue tits, swallows, corncrake, cuckoos, lady wagtails and yellow hammers.
Some of these birds such as the woodcock and the snipe migrate at the end of Winter, while the cuckoo, the corncrake and the swallows migrate at the end of Summer because of the severity of the weather.
There are many sayings connected with the coming of the cuckoo. Some people take money about with them when the cuckoo is due to arrive because it is said that if you have enough money in your pocket the first time you hear her
