    There was a hearth in those houses and the people burned turf, furze and heathery sods. The people slept on beds of straw and they got up very early. there was earthen floors in the houses and they had no lamps only the light of the fire. Matches were unknown and to keep the fire lighting a big fire of turf was put down every night in a way the fire would be lighting in the morning.
